This 8-hour course is designed to educate police personnel on the legalities and challenges faced when responding to calls from developmentally disabled individuals. Attendees will learn to identify, understand, and respond to developmentally disabled persons in crisis. The course will cover autism and the autism spectrum, individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired, persons with Down syndrome, social and cognitive challenges, and behavioral differences. Additionally, officer response behaviors, de-escalation techniques and training aids will be discussed.
NOTE: Students will participate in group discussions and activities. This version of Law Enforcement Response and Interaction with the Developmentally Disabled Community is conducted entirely online through a live instructor-led process. Students will need a computer or tablet with webcam and microphone capabilities in order to participate in this course.
