Incident Debrief: Barricaded Sovereign Citizen Gunman, Illinois

This presentation discusses a barricaded gunman incident involving a subject with a military background who claimed to be a sovereign citizen and survivalist. The subject was barricaded in a residence with his wife, who indicated to negotiators that her husband had multiple shooting positions set up in the home, the front door was booby trapped with a shotgun, and there were IEDs present throughout the residence. Response involved SSERT, CNT, use of OC and CS gas, and a BearCat to gain access to the home.

Brian Tencza - Bio
Brian Tencza is a patrol sergeant for the Flossmoor (IL) Police Department with 25 years of law enforcement experience. He is currently the Tactical Field Coordinator for the South Suburban Emergency Response Team with 17 years of SWAT experience. He has a Master's Degree from Governors State University in Public Administration and did his undergraduate work at Illinois Wesleyan University. He is an instructor for the North East Multi-Regional Training and has trained thousands of officers and SWAT operators from various agencies. He is also a paramedic for his agency.
