On June 29, 2025, multiple fire agencies responded to a woodland fire on the west side of Canfield Mountain, just east of the City of Coeur d'Alene, ID. While working the fire, an armed assailant ambushed three of the firefighters, killing two and gravely wounding the third. Active shooter calls went out from the firefighters onscene, triggering a large law enforcement response from Coeur d'Alene and Kootenai County agencies as well as nearby Spokane, WA law enforcement agencies. Initial responding officers were met with gun fire from the suspect who had taken an elevated position in the tree line. An officer involved shooting occurred and the injured firefighter was evacuated. for the next 4 hours, multiple tactical teams worked on the recovery of the deceased fire officers as well as tactics to locate and arrest the suspect. Through the use of technology, the suspect was located deceased in the forest from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Brent Austin began his law enforcement career in 1996 with the Kennewick Police Department. He lateraled to the Spokane Police Department in 1998. Brent has been assigned to the SWAT team since 2000, holding positions as team leader, senior team leader, assistant team commander, and now commander. His primary assignments have been patrol, K9, special investigations and anti-crime. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2023. Brent has been a patrol tactics instructor for the basic law enforcement academy and a firearms, less lethal, and chemical agents instructor for his agency. Since 2012, Brent has been a cadre member of the Washington State Tactical Officers Association, where he teaches basic and advanced SWAT courses.

Arek Brock is a detective with a Sheriff's Office in North Idaho. He is assigned to an anti-crime team and US Marshals Task Force. Arek is a team leader on the regional SWAT team. Arek is a cadre instructor for the Washington State Tactical Officers Association.
